Ciro Chen – Designer at finleap

My name is Ciro Chen, and I’m a product designer in the finleap build team.

My main ambition is building easy-to-use, user-centered and eye-appealing digital products. In the past two years, I’ve been working for different ventures in the finleap ecosystem, with international cross-functional teams, like Perseus and Joonko.

What does diversity in the workplace mean to you?

It means I have the opportunity to listen to different voices from different genders, backgrounds and cultures. It means that I feel safe and free to present my ideas and be creative, without worrying about what my teammates will think about me – because every voice, every idea is welcomed.

What do companies have to change or start doing to become more diverse?

Companies need to start fostering diversity to make it a part of company culture. I would recommend making it a major factor in drafting working agreements. Don’t just pay attention to voices you find similar to your own – instead, welcome every voice.

finleap is doing very well in this area. Besides striving every day for diversity of gender, thought etc., we have employees from all over the world. It brings satisfaction to our work, as well as an increased capacity for innovation of a team/company.

Why do you think diversity in teams & companies is important?

In teams & companies, we all have the same goal, and that is to make the product we are working on become successful. Team diversity makes communication more valuable to me. It also helps the team understand problems from more angles, and find solutions that are more mature and fit in broader contexts.

What does diversity mean in finleap’s ecosystem?

It means we can learn more from each other.

For instance, in the finleap ecosystem, there are many product designers working for different ventures. We have similar job titles, but huge differences in terms of expertise, knowledge fields, cultural background and so on… And because of this diversity, on our monthly designer meetup, we have so much good knowledge to share, so many interesting topics to discuss. As a designer, this is definitely an opportunity to grow.
